Despite her being my favourite character, I'm not especially bothered as to whether or not Twilight becomes a princess. It was fairly obvious from the first few episodes she was heading in that sort of direction: She stands between night and day, her cutiemark is a constellation, her element is a crown instead of a necklace, training under Celestia (for what is never really specified), and she generally kicks butt. Princess, yes. Alicorn, admittedly, not so much.
I understand other peoples concerns about it becoming "Disneyfied" but if someone had said three and a half years ago that MLP would be one of the most successful children's shows ever, adored by adults and kids alike, would anyone have believed them? I think we need to give the writers some credit here. They're stuck between the hardcore bronies and Hasbro's higher-ups. Its a toy company, of course they're going to push the show for merchendise.
Besides, what's so wrong about telling kids they can become something special if they work hard? Not only is it about her magic, its about her newly acquired knowledge of other ponies/people, and of understanding the importance of thier own problems, no matter how small, essential for people in "higher-up" roles. Kids aren't as stupid and gulible as many adults think they are. Not every girl wants to be a princess, thats true, but did watching Disney movies as kids turn you or your friends or sisters into princess loving ditzes? Probably not, no.
I hope they do well with it. It could be the biggest mistake they make with the show, and I'm intruiged to see where its going. It could be amazing, it could be absolute poo.
Edit: The episode was good, I suppose. I'd have prefered it over two episodes, but we can't have everything. Loved all the songs XD
