As I come to the end of this commission batch (two more dolls to make) I think it might be time to talk about upcoming plans and ask for your opinions, if you have moments to spare.
I'm thinking of making and selling patterns with tutorials. Two ways - one on etsy, which would be patterns and basic walkthrough, and another on Patreon, where there would be more detailed walkthroughs, classes, extra patterns for learning, etc etc. So I'd like to use Patreon as a kind of classroom, geared more towards hand-sewing and such. But the patterns would still be full on patterns, not basic ginger-bread style cutouts.
People on Patreon could vote for what comes next, or what technique they would like to learn. I'd also discuss fabrics, stylisation, etc.
This also helps me write the long-in-progress plush book. I've seen many reviews online for easier books with easier projects, but people complaining they're still too hard. I suspect it's just that the instructions aren't clear, so using these patterns as a practice ground will be very helpful.
Classes would also be progressive, so we'd start with something a little simpler (a basic cat, maybe) and move further up into higher detail as we go.
I would also use Patreon for my book stuff. I have plans for illustrated books like Silver Jill, but I would also like to have a shot at colouring books (dragerrrrns) and short stories. So plushies, art and writing would all feature. Also, tutorials in art and watercolour, digital, etc?
For those who have an interest in learning various crafts Patreon would have a wide array, and I hope the need to satisfy backers would help keep my ass in gear. For those who want plush patterns but don't need the assistance, they would be available on etsy. Routine updates would be available via tumblr and Instagram as presently they are, but near daily updates and sneak peeks would be shared on Patreon.
I will NOT be stopping any present format to push folks to Patreon. Patreon would just be an extra for those that like it.
I'm not 100% decided on plans, and this won't be happening until the new year, so feel free to share pointers or opinions if you have any.
